  • As cities were growing, industries were expanding, and technological advancements were booming
  • Immigration continued the growth of cities due to desire for jobs, religious freedom, and an all around better life
    *Most immigrants during this era were Irish, German, Italian and Chinese
  • Conditions in the cities led directly to the social reforms of the Progressive Era

Key Points:

  • Progressive reformers tried to solve the problems of cities, politics, and the economy
  • Social problems were the focus of reformers, especially in the work place and in the living conditions of cities
  • More government involvement in business to end discrimination and poor treatment of workers
  • Discrimination and nativism surged throughout the era because of competition for available resources such as jobs, housing, and consumer goods
