  • Sharecropping and tenant farming emerged throughout the old South
  • South divided into districts and ratified 14th Amendment to be readmitted to the Union
  • Rebuilding created more divisions in politics

  • Corruption within politics, especially local level governments with political machines
  • Laissez faire ideology applied in American government to allow for economic growth
  • Grange movement united many western farmers
