Time Period I (1850's - 1910's)

Imperialism

The following video was created by John Green for review purposes

Key Points:

  • Expansion and colonization was occuring throughout the world, especially by European powers, and the United States wanted to compete economically
  • Justification for Imperialism was "White Man's Burden" or the need to civlize those who were seen as uncivil or inferior to Americans
  • Annexation of Alaska and Hawaii for resources and competition
  • Spanish American War over the territories of Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. "Splendid Little War" was a great American success
  • Panama Canal greatly expanded world trade by decreasing costs and increasing profits
