SYLLABLES
Syllable skills involve chunking parts of a word but recognizing that they are still part of the same word. For instance, understanding that if I am going to eat a "hotdog" for lunch then it is only one word, but if my puppy gets overheated then I have a "hog dog", which is two separate words.
Syllable knowledge is important for reading and writing longer words that may need to be chunked visually and orally. It is also valuable for writing longer words when students needs to sound out one chunk at a time.
