How did Caravaggio's use of chiaroscuro influence later painters?

It could be easily agreed upon that Caravaggio's most significant contribution to art history is his use of chiaroscuro. This use of dramatic contrast between lights and darks further dramatizes the subject, bringing emotions upon the viewer that may have not been possible with normal lighting.
