ASL
stands for American Sign Language. American Sign Language is the
official language for hearing impaired individuals. American Sign
Language is communicated through various hand gestures as well as
facial expressions to create an appropriate way to ask or exclaim a phrase or question. In the United States alone, there are more than 500,000 users of ASL including hearing impaired individuals, their family members and friends. Sign Language is not universal, meaning each country has its own signs and hand gestures to match their specific language. ASL is continuously changing its gestures. ASL contains its own rules for pronounciation, word order, and grammar aspects. For example, in English we might say, "Do you want to go get pizza later?" In ASL, they will just sign "You- Want- Pizza- Later?". By asking this question, individuals that can speak will typically raise their voice. However, ASL signers will essentially widen their eyes, raise their eyebrows or shoulders. As we venture through this ASL webiste and through the daily life of a hearing impaired individual. I wanted to include an inspiring, courageous, young hearing impaired individual. His name is Nyle Dimarco, he will help us learn more about ASL. Nyle Dimarco is a hearing impaired individual that starred on Americas Next Top Model in which he won and amazingly, Nyle also won Dancing with the Stars on season 22. When asked about winning Dancing with the Stars, Nyle best describes how he won by stating that he just visualized the beat of the music in his head by claps, smacks, and other rhythm mechanisms before he performed his dances. |
