Inclusive Design in Education

What is Universal Design of Learning (UDL)?

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is an approach to teaching that helps all students learn by offering flexible ways to access, engage with, and show what they know. Instead of expecting every learner to fit one model UDL designs lessons that work for many different abilities and learning preferences from the start.

Diagram showing how the three principles of Universal Design- Engagement, Representation, and Action and Expression activate different parts of the brain.

Three Principles:
1. Multiple Means of Engagement– Spark interest and motivation by giving students choices in how they learn.

2. Multiple Means of Representation– Present information in different ways such as text, visuals, audio, or hands-on activities.

3. Multiple Means of Action and Expression– Allow students to show what they’ve learned through different formats like writing, speaking, creating, or performing.
