IREX: Project TEAM: Assignment

Technology-Rich Lesson

Overview

We're now ready to bring together all of the pieces of the puzzle. In this project, you will plan a 2-day lesson that integrates technology appropriately. You will choose the grade level and subject area that you would like to teach.

NOTE: This project may be created in a Google Site or Doc, a Word document, or a Wiki.

There are three parts to this project:

Part I: The Lesson Plan

The Lesson Plan should be realistic and based detailed enough so that other teachers could use it as a guide. For this project, you will create your own lesson that covers two days of activities on a topic of your choice, but it should integrate technology in key ways. It is okay to get ideas from other lesson plans, but compiling the components for this project should be your own work. For example, you might find a lesson plan that has not integrated any technology. You would need to convert this idea to integrate technology into the lesson.

Part II: Student Activities Page

A Student Activities page includes directions and links for the students to use. This page should describe the activities that students will do for TWO periods of a single week.

Design your Student Activities page so that your students can work on it without your assistance. Think of it as if they are working on a laptop in your classroom or in teams, while you will be working with other students. The primary role of the teacher for these lessons should be that of a facilitator. This means that you need to include detailed instructions on your page and all of the materials and links necessary to complete the assignment. Also, it is required that your lesson integrate at least one traditional technology addressed (Office products, Web 1.0), and at least one emerging technology addressed in the course (Web 2.0 tools).

Part III: Teacher Resource Page

A Teacher Resource contains additional resources for the topics in your unit. Remember, that when you are a teacher you will be planning lessons for more than one class for one week. Most of you will have have between four and six preps that you will be creating for your classes.

Part I is the lesson plan which should outline what your students will be doing.

You should address all of these issues:

-The grade level and curricular area your lesson targets
-Learning objectives
-The materials you will use and how you will use them. Since this is a technology integrated unit, you'll certainly want to include at least one traditional technology addressed and at least one emerging technology addressed in the course here and/or in the next two parts.)
-What your students will do (student activities)
-How you will evaluate learning (formal or informal). A rubric might be appropriate here.
-Other instructions necessary for completing the lesson.

Part II is a Student Activities Page should describe the activities that students will do for TWO periods for one week.

The activities should be detailed and provide STEP-BY-STEP instructions for your students.

Design your Student Activities page so that your students can work on it without your assistance. Think of it as if they are working on a laptop in your classroom and you will be working with other students while they work on the lesson. This means that you need to include detailed instructions on your page and all of the materials and links necessary to complete the assignment. The instructor role should be facilitative in nature.

YOU MAY include homework as part of the class activities. However, consider student access to technology outside of the classroom. For your project, the primary focus should be what your students should do in class.

Include graphics, links, directions, examples, clues...whatever to make the activities interesting and enjoyable.

Most importantly, your Student Activities page should also reflect the ways that you have integrated a variety of different technologies into your lesson plan.

In this course you have (and will continue to) learned about and practiced a variety of different technologies. Try to incorporate these technologies into your students activities. Strategies for some examples.

Part III is a teacher resources page about the topic that you are teaching. It should list additional resources that might be helpful to you, to others teaching the lesson, or to your students. So, if it's the vocabulary you will provide 8 to 10 annotated resources that you would recommend that teachers review if they are teaching on English vocabulary. An annotated link means that you are also going to provide a description of the link and why it's helpful. Additionally, include any tips or guidance that might be helpful for teachers implementing the lesson plan.

Example of an annotated bibliography.

A few reminders...

This page should include the title of the web site which is hyperlinked to the Web site. DO NOT copy and paste the URL onto the page. It must be an active link.

Find specific resources. Do NOT list Wikipedia, Google, or YouTube as a resource. Educators already know about these places to search. If you found an excellent video at YouTube and you're certain the facts represented in the video can be verified, you can list it. :-) Please test all links on this page!
