Types of Meditation

There are two main types of meditation:

  • Sitting
  • Moving
Focusing on the Breath. Image from www.anandamarga.org

Within these two meditation types, there are many variations. For instance, when we meditate sitting down, we can meditate silently or with a teacher who guides us.

When we engage in a moving meditation, we can walk, eat, and even wash the dishes as long as we do it with intention and mindfulness. Mindfulness is being aware of what you are doing and the sensations that arise from it.

For instance, let's say you are washing dishes, be conscious of the each dish, the soap, the water, how it feels in your hands, being aware of each feeling or sensation associated with the act of washing dishes. Our minds tend to wander at such 'menial' tasks and before you know it, the dishes are d
one and you can't remember doing them.

Training our minds to focus and be present in the 'now' is the goal of meditation.
