"A journey is like marriage. The certain way to be wrong is to think you control it." -John Steinbeck

  • What to Pack

This is possibly the most tedious, but most important part of your journey. Especially if you are traveling in a foreign contry, being unprepared by not packing properly can be frustrating!

Packing is all about planning. And making lists (I love lists). If you are flying, before you start throwing stuff in to a suitcase, keep in mind:
  1. Luggage weight restrictions - Check with your airline to see how heavy each bag can be before the fees start
  2. Luggage fees - Even if your luggage isn't overweight, sometimes there is a fee for each bag
Now it is time to get back to that list!
  • List your essentials (pants, shorts, shoes, toothbrush) by category:
    • Clothing
    • Toiletries
    • Footwear
    • Outwear
    • Accessories
    • Wallet/Purse Items
  • Key items to never, EVER forget:
    • Driver's license and/or passport
    • Money/credit card
    • Cell phone (w/ charger...please don't forget the charger!)
    • Copy of all itineraries, reservations, contact numbers, etc.
  • This checklist should help you keep organized (click on the image for the file)

  • What to Do Before You Leave
Remember that when you leave your home to go on vacation, life still goes on without you. Make sure to:
    • Secure all valuables in your home
    • Lock all doors and windows
    • Shut your blinds and/or curtains
    • If you are going to be gone for longer than one week:
      • Have your mail held - USPS Hold Mail Service
      • Turn off the water supply to your house
      • Unplug computers, TVs, and any other appliances that draw lots of energy (but NOT kitchen appliances)
